The Faculty of Physician Associates launches a physician associate Developing Excellence in Leadership programme

The Faculty of Physician Associates (FPA) is delighted to announce the return of the physician associate (PA) Developing Excellence in Leadership programme. The programme is being delivered in partnership with the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) education team and will commence on 21 November 2022.

Thanks to the generosity of Health Education England, the FPA is pleased to be able to offer 20 FPA PA members a fully funded place on this CPD-accredited programme.

The Developing Excellence in Leadership programme is a fantastic opportunity both for PAs currently working in a leadership role who want to develop further and for PAs aspiring to become leaders in the future. The programme will provide PAs with the knowledge, skills, and guidance they need to become confident and committed leaders.

The structure

The programme will consist of 5 days of in-person teaching workshops.

Delivering each in person workshop will be a team of experienced medical educationalists, PAs and doctors currently working in the NHS and at the RCP.

Workshop 1 – 21 November 2022

An introduction to the leadership programme

  • Identify personal objectives
  • Recognise leadership aspirations and challenges for PAs
  • Complete a tailored leadership self-assessment for PAs (FFLM standards)
  • Introduce the role of action learning sets
  • Undertake a Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) assessment, analyse the results and explore personality and leadership to formulate an action plan for development needs

Workshop 2 – 19 January 2023

The individual as leader

  • Define leadership and recognise the qualities of a good leader
  • Recognise why leadership in medicine is so important
  • Identify different leadership styles
  • Introduce the clinical leadership competency framework
  • Recognise the impact of emotional intelligence on effective leadership
  • Identify effective strategies for influencing and persuading.

Workshop 3 – 13 March 2023

Organisational leadership

  • Understand the structure of today’s NHS
  • Consider how your own organisation works
  • Recognise the importance and role of organisational culture
  • Explore the concept of change management

Workshop 4 – 19 May 2023

Leadership and clinical teams

  • Explore different theories of team development and sustainability
  • Identify your role in developing an effective team
  • Describe methods of maintaining an effective clinical team and identifying when they are not effective
  • Learn about different strategies for leadership
  • Consider the most effective leadership style to use in your workplace
  • Identify effective strategies for dealing with challenging conversations

Workshop 5 – 5 July 2023

Personal welfare and resilience

  • Describe and explain the notion of personal resilience
  • Identify the characteristics of resilient people
  • Explore what helps and hinders your own personal resilience
  • Practise strategies to help explore someone else’s personal resilience
  • Develop strategies to promote awareness of personal resilience

This workshop will also explore next steps for delegates completing the programme.

Programme benefits

Delegates who successfully complete the programme will be equipped with the knowledge to continue transitioning into a PA leadership role. 

Upon completion of the programme, delegates will be required to submit a short (1,000 word) summative assignment for assessment and will be eligible for leadership accreditation as approved by the RCP.

The assignment will require the delegate to reflect on their leadership role against the clinical leadership competency framework. The programme is approved for type 1 external CPD, with each workshop awarding 5 CPD points.

When and where 

The programme will operate in-person from the RCP’s Northern home, The Spine in Liverpool. Workshops will take place between 21 November 2022 – 5 July 2023 as outlined above.

How to apply 

The FPA is pleased to welcome applications from PAs who:

  • are a qualified FPA member listed on the Managed Voluntary Register
  • have a minimum of 3 years post-registration experience in clinical practice. While this is not essential, the programme is recommended for PAs with such experience. Applications from PAs with 1 – 2 years’ experience will still be considered.
  • can demonstrate previous leadership experience in a clinical setting.

Applications will close on 10 October 2022. We advise getting agreement from your supervisor that you will be released from clinical duties to attend all in-person programme workshops before applying.

Successful applicants will be notified by 21 October 2022 and will be required to sign a learning agreement upon accepting a place on the programme.

Please note: a contribution toward travel and accommodation expenses for programme-related activities will be provided for successful applicants.
