FPA responds to misleading language used on NHS posters describing physician associates as physicians

The Faculty of Physician Associates (FPA), which is currently hosted by the Royal College of Physicians (RCP), is clear that physician associates are not doctors.

We have been made aware of NHS posters that describe PAs as ‘physicians’. This is misleading and goes against our published national guidance on titles and introductions, which provides PAs, supervisors and NHS employers with a standardised way of using the physician associate title. The guidance also makes it clear that PAs should introduce themselves clearly and with a full explanation about their role in the healthcare team. Patients must always receive clear and accurate information about who is treating them and making decisions about their care.

The FPA is happy to provide support and advice to NHS organisations when they are designing patient-facing information and encourages teams to contact us for more information.
